Life and work with Owen Murphy

We continue our conversations this month with Owen Murphy. Owen spent over 15 years working in various accounting and finance roles before setting up his own firm - O Murphy Accountancy in 2018.

Owen’s ethos is to work in partnership with his clients and to add value to their businesses.

kesero is all about working collaboratively, so we love hearing how small businesses are supporting each other.

Tell us about your work

I started my business to provide a better work/life balance which I believe you can do best when you are your own boss. The other was to work with smaller businesses that you feel you can make a genuine difference to which was a complete change of pace in comparison to working for a global company where you’re effectively a tiny cog in a huge machine

A typical week

One of the best parts about the job is that there isn’t really what you would call a typical week which keeps it interesting. A big part of the week is spent on completing the day to day activities while the rest of the time I am normally meeting with or on the phone to clients, attending CPD and networking events, joining various webinars, or promoting the business through social media.

The best part of my week

Is meeting up with new and existing clients, both for the social interaction and the satisfaction it brings to know that you’re having an influence (no matter how small) on their business.

Skills that would help me

Further developing my networking skills which are really important when running a small business. I would also love to learn to play a musical instrument at some point, but I’m not convinced I have the patience required!

Self-care for me is…

Personally is about being able to switch off from work and the other pressures in life to make time for the important things and to relax. I am a bit of a running addict which is a great tool for being able to clear your mind and gain perspective on things.
